Voice Recognition

December 30, 2008 – 10:16 am

When it comes to voice recognition, the technology is still not perfect, as recognizing speech is a very complicated process. The computer often has to process what the speaker is saying in real-time, which makes it even more difficult. There are many programs which were designed to recognize speech, but this time I would like discuss one which is completely free, if you have a Windows operating system and Microsoft Office. Microsoft Windows XP has this interesting feature that enables to convert your speech into text files. All you need to do to use this program is to install it properly. In order to install it, follow these steps:
1. Go to Start button, the press Control Panel and then Add or Remove Programs.
2. Now look for Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage and then click on Change button.
3. Next, select the option Add or Remove Features. After this press Next.
4. Your next step will be to follow this path: Office Shared Features–> Alternative User Input–> Speech? Run from My Computer? Update.
5. The program will take some time now to install the program.
6. After the installation is finished, go to your Word document, Tools for the upper menu bar and select Speech.
7. Complete the training by following steps given by the program.
I have to warn you that this feature does not work as well as it could, so there is still some room for progress, but nonetheless, it can be a useful tool.
