Solid State Drives

Hard drives as we know them, have been around for a long time. Recently, there has been an innovation when it comes to HDDs, namely creating solid state drives. They promise a more reliable storage location and better performance. While this sounds great this new technology has its disadvantages, as well as advantages. The advantages are:

  • No moving parts result in higher reliability. Since data stored on hard drives is often very valuable, reliability is very important as well.
  • Improved random read speed. They can read data faster due to lack of required “firing up”.
  • They produce less noise, which can be an advantage in many environments.
  • Uses less electricity. This might be ultimately the reason why many businesses will switch to solid state drives.
  • On the other hand, here are some disadvantages:

  • Hard to find large solid hard drives. The biggest are 256GB, but it is hard to find bigger than 128GB. This can be a problem for anyone who is making backup of his DVD movies, or wants to store other multimedia data on his computer.
  • Random write speeds can be four times slower compared to regular drives.
  • Due to the fact that the technology is relatively new, the drives are very expensive compared to traditional ones. This will probably change in time.
  • Overall, I think that solid state drives might even dominate the market, but it will still require many years and definitely it is not a bargain to buy them now.

    2. Nice post. I learn something totally new and challenging on blogs I stumbleupon on a daily basis. It’s always interesting to read articles from other authors and practice a little something from other sites.
