The history of psychology goes back to the early Greeks, who were fascinated with the human psyche. Various approaches to psychology are found in many cultures and nations, both in the East and the West. Today, psychology is a fully accepted, scientific discipline, with emphasis on both counseling and testing.
There is a wide variety of psychological testing assessments that are fully accepted as scientifically valid by the American Psychological Association. Examples of psychological tests that are proven to be valid and helpful include the Myers-Briggs, MMPI, Strong Campbell Interest Inventory, Taylor-Johnson Temperament Analysis, and many more. Tests can determine whether an individual suffers from a mental illness such as depression, ADD, or ADHD, as well as identifying one’s IQ and personality type. Tests can also be used to determine a child’s fitness for a gifted and talented program. Pre-marital counseling often includes a compatibility test based upon psychological testing assessment. Career preference testing is available for those looking for a direction to pursue in job hunting.
There are skeptics with regard to the science of psychology and the validity of counseling and testing. However, there is ample evidence that many psychological tests are indeed solidly grounded and provide valid information. As an example of psychological services available, the Carole and Ronald Krist Samaritan Center offers counseling and testing for such situations as family conflict, trauma issues, symptoms of anxiety, child depression, alcohol/drug abuse, spiritual issues, and more.
