Games and Terrorists

September 7, 2010 – 9:55 am

People can have a lot of fun with online games. However, some people claim that apart from having fun, games can also help to locate terrorist activities. It seems that the U.S. Intelligence Community is going to try to monitor the online gaming community for any signs of terrorists. A report from the Director of National Intelligence seems to indicate that there is going to happen a lot of data mining in order to profile online gaming behavior. The goal that National Intelligence wants to achieve is to automatically detect suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world. The question that the public might want to ask, is how exactly does the U.S. Intelligence plan to monitor suspicious behavior, and what constitutes suspicious behavior in the first place. Will this be a waste of government’s money? Many think it will, as it is hard to imagine how this system could work effectively. However, the fact remains that there are many online gaming communities forming. It is true that among them there might be some potential terrorists, but the problem is that a lot of communication takes place over voice chat programs line Ventrillo. Monitoring a program like Ventrillo would be very difficult, as there does not exist any reliable speech recognition program.
