Brightness in Games
September 19, 2010 – 9:36 amHave you ever played a video game that was interesting and engaging, but the graphics were too dark in order to fully enjoy the game? Dark style of graphics is often the result of the graphics engine. I think that a lot of players remember playing games like that, and they are not that much fun, because often you might feel quite depressed after playing such a game. Even after adjusting brightness options, the game can be still dark. I wonder why the producers of games make games which are so dark, especially if those are not some type of horror games. On the other hand, I understand that if a game is designed to depict, for example, post apocalyptic London, there is a reason for gloomy graphics. Of course, the companies designing games should also keep in mind that there is not a big market for horror games. After all, are not games supposed to cheer us up? Let us take a look at a popular game called World of Warcraft. The graphics in that game is quite colorful and appeals to a large group of players. There is nothing bad I can say about it. Since there are around 11 million of users subscribed to this game at the moment, it seems that creating such colorful graphics paid off, at least from a financial standpoint. There are also many adventure games that are colorful, and I do not know if it is a coincidence, but they are usually the most popular adventure games being sold. So while there certainly is a market for dark gloomy games, there are also gamers who will not enjoy such setting. Allowing gamers to adjust various graphical settings may be the key to make a game appealing to different type of gamers.
